How to Have a Successful Memorial Day Party!

Memorial Day is coming up and the weather shouldn’t be to hot to enjoy your outdoor space and entertain.  Whether you are just having a few friends over or a big get together these ideas are sure to help you make it successful.

Main Dish

Build your own hot dog bar, this is something fairly easy to put together and can cater to all kinds of taste buds!


Ingredients

  • 12 or more large beef hot dogs
  • bratwurst buns (enough for the dogs)

Gather up the fixin’s

  • dill pickle spears
  • white onion (diced)
  • tomatoes (cut into wedges)
  • sweet pickles (relish or dice your own)
  • yellow mustard
  • celery seed
  • Bush’s Cocina Latina, Frijoles a la Mexicana beans
  • pico de gallo
  • shredded cheese blend
  • pickled jalapeno slices
  • chili with no beans
  • Sweet Baby Ray’s barbeque sauce
  • french fried onions
Instructions
  1. Grill up the hot dogs and get them on the buns, for each style of hot dog add the following…
Chicago Style
  1. yellow mustard, diced sweet pickles, diced white onion, dill pickle spear, tomato wedges and celery seed
Taco
  1. Bush’s Cocina Latina, Frijoles a la Mexicana beans. pico de gallo, shredded cheese blend, jalapeno slices
Chili Cheese (Coney)
  1. chili with no beans, shredded cheese blend, diced white onion
Tex-Mex
  1. Sweet Baby Ray’s barbeque sauce, french fried onions, shredded cheese blend

Side Dish

Honey Lime Fruit Salad

Ingredients
  • 8 cups of fresh fruit – we used watermelon, cantaloupe, pineapple, kiwi, strawberries, blueberries, black raspberries, grapes and peaches
  • ½ cup fresh lime juice + zest of 2 limes
  • ½ cup honey
  • Almonds, optional
Instructions
  1. Clean and cut fruit, place in a large bowl
  2. Zest limes into bowl
  3. Juice limes and combine with honey, pour over fruit
  4. Chill for at least 1 hour before serving
  5. Sprinkle with almonds if desired

Dessert

Patriotic Pie Squares

Make these Patriotic Pie Squares for your next get-together, they go together quickly and can be made ahead of time. Recipe from HoosierHomemade.com. Adapted from Pillsbury

  • Prep Time: 10 minutes
  • Cook Time: 10 minutes
  • Total Time: 20 minutes
  • Yield: 20-30 squares depending on size of cookie cutter

Ingredients

  • 1 box Pie Crust {or make your own}
  • Milk and Sugar for brushing on pie crust
  • Fresh fruit – strawberries, blackberries and blueberries
  • 1-2 teaspoons lemon juice
  • 1 small box instant vanilla pudding + milk
  • 1 tub COOL WHIP Whipped Topping {you won’t use it all}

Special Tools needed

  • Square and Mini Star Cookie Cutters

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees
  2. Remove pie crust from box and roll out with rolling pin,cut with a square cookie cutter and cut 2 stars for each square
  3. Place on cookie sheet sprayed with non-stick cooking spray {NOTE: the stars won’t take as long as the squares, so either bake on separate sheet or watch them closely and remove early}
  4. Brush each square with milk and sprinkle with sugar
  5. Bake squares for about 7-8 minutes or until golden brown – Bake stars about 3-5 minutes
  6. Let cool
  7. Mix pudding and milk and place in fridge to set about 5 minutes
  8. Cut the strawberries and place in small bowl with blueberries and blackberries
  9. Add lemon juice and toss to coat

Assembly

  1. To each square, add a spoonful of pudding, then a large spoonful of COOL WHIP, add the stars and fruit
